Ho! Ho! Ho!
The best thing readers can do for authors is review their books. So, all this Christmas season, Santa will be reviewing various picture books and posting the reviews on various reading websites like Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.
So, sit by the fire, sip your hot cocoa, and peruse these reviews. I’d suggest you buy these stories for the children in your lives.
Merry Christmas,
Rock Star Santa
The Book Cook by D.C. Swanson, Illustrated by Clint Hansen
Published by Baobab Press
It’s Christmas Eve, and 11-year-old twins, Maria and Marty, have somehow forgotten to get their mother a Christmas gift. So, at the last minute, they venture out into a blizzard to find a store that is s till open. The store that they find is like no other store they’ve ever heard of, and neither will the reader.
Swanson has cooked up a fantastic tale which includes all the elements of writing a book in a most unusual way. Children, families, children’s authors, and teachers will find something in this tale that can be used to teach about family, kindness of strangers, and most importantly Christmas love.
Written in rhyme, Swanson has a way with words, some new to the readers, which is another point teachers will love…new vocabulary words. And Hansen’s graphic illustrations with hints of color capture the mood of the story perfectly.
Rock Star Santa highly recommends this story for a refreshing, original Christmas story.
The Queen and the First Christmas Tree by Nancy Churnin, Illustrations by Luisa Uribe
A clever historical fiction picture book describing Princess Charlotte's contribution to a CHristmas celebration in England. When she leaves her home in Germany to marry Great Britian's King George III, she brings her family's favorite Christmas tradition with her, decorating a yew branch with ribbons and flowers.
Years later, as Charlotte becomes Queen, she devotes her time to charities bettering the lives of children, but she needs more than branches for all the children, so she decks evergreen trees with candles and paper baskets of treats. Thanks to Queen Charlotte, the beloved Christmas tree has become a cherished part of the Christmas season.
Rock Star Santa highly recommends this story for a historical perspective and a look back on the importance and significance of the decorated trees in our living rooms.
