More Book Reviews from Rock Star Santa's Book Bag!

Writer's picture: Gayle KrauseGayle Krause

We are continuing the book reviews of recent children's picture books found in Rock Star Santa's Book Bag in January 2025.

A SPOONFUL OF FROGS by Casey Lyall, illustrations by Vero Brosgol

Look out cooking channel…this witch is creating a soup that will be a smash hit…if she can ever catch the main ingredient. The best part about this book for me is how it lends itself to voice inflection, allowing teachers and parents to have fun with the words. It’s all in how you read it.

And a second bonus is the flexibility of this book. It can be used as a bedtime story, a story to inspire a young cook trying to make his/her own delightful snack, and simply for Halloween.

Lyall’s sense of humor and Brosgol’s illustrations complement each other nicely to present an awesome picture book. And the surprise ending is perfect!

CARLA’S GLASSES by Debbie Herman, illustration by Sheila Bailey

Carla is confident, independent, and creative…very creative. So much so that she uses her quirky imaginative skills to help a friend. Her kind-hearted antics save the day for her best friend, Buster, and tie the whole class together in a common endeavor that turns out to be fun- tabulous for everyone, especially Buster.

SO MUCH SLIME by Jason Lefebvre, illustrations by Zac Retz

One slime class demonstration coming up…and over… and all around. When Matty forgets a key ingredient for his slime project the entire class tries to help fix it. But it grows and bubbles and has everything mixed into it but the teacher. Children can make their own slime after reading this funny story and hopefully, it won’t be a sticky mess like Matty’s. A perfect STEM book for the classroom or the home kitchen.
